  3.                  REINSTALLING MS-DOS 6.0 AND OPTIONAL PROGRAMS
  4.                  (Applies to Stacker 3.1 for Windows and DOS)

  9.        BACKGROUND.
  10.        
  11.        The MS-DOS 6.0 setup program may fail if MS-DOS 6.0 is already
  12.        installed and drive C is compressed with Stacker 3.1.  Under this
  13.        configuration, MS-DOS 6.0 setup cannot identify your hard disk's
  14.        startup partition.
  15.        
  16.        SOLUTION
  17.        
  18.            Disable swapping of drive C
  19.            Restart your computer and set PATH to the compressed boot
  20.              drive
  21.            Run MS-DOS SETUP /E or SETUP /Q
  22.            Enable swapping of drive C and restart your computer
  23.            Modify SYSTEM.INI and PROGMAN.INI
  24.             
  25.        Disable swapping of drive C
  26.        
  27.         1. Insert Stacker Disk 1 into drive A or B.
  28.         2. Change to the floppy disk drive by typing A: (or B:) and
  29.            pressing <Enter>.
  30.         3. From the DOS prompt, type STACKER and press <Enter>.
  31.         4. Note the drive letter of the uncompressed drive which is
  32.            exchanged with C (your boot drive).  The drive letter is
  33.            displayed in the far right column.
  34.         5. From the DOS prompt, type
  35.        
  36.                 \TOOLS\STACINI drive:
  37.        
  38.            where drive: is the letter of the uncompressed drive.
  39.         6. Change the swap parameter on the line C:\STACVOL.DSK from SW
  40.            to NS.
  41.        
  42.                     C:\STACVOL.DSK,NS
  43.        
  44.         7. Press Ctrl+Z to save the file.
  45.             
  46.        Restart your computer and set PATH to the compressed boot drive
  47.        
  48.         1. Restart your computer.
  49.         2. At the DOS prompt, type:
  50.        
  51.                     PATH=drive:\DOS;drive:\;drive:\WINDOWS
  52.        
  53.            where drive is the letter of the drive which is exchanged
  54.            with C.
  55.             
  56.        Run MS-DOS SETUP /E or SETUP /Q
  57.        
  58.        Select the appropriate installation procedure.
  59.        
  60.         TO REINSTALL MS-DOS 6.0

  62.        |1. To reinstall all of MS-DOS 6.0, run SETUP /Q from Setup       |
  63.        |   Disk 1.  After the welcome message, setup displays default    |
  64.        |   system settings:                                              |
  65.        |                                                                 |
  66.        |       DOS Type:      MS-DOS                                     |
  67.        |       MS-DOS Path:   C:\DOS                                     |
  68.        |       Display Type:  VGA                                        |
  69.        |                                                                 |
  70.        |2. Change MS-DOS Path to the drive which is exchanged with C.    |
  71.        |   For example, if C swaps with H, change the path to H:\DOS.    |
  72.        |                                                                 |
  73.        |       MS-DOS Path:   H:\DOS                                     |
  74.        |                                                                 |
  75.        |3. Follow the instructions on your screen.                       |

  78.         TO INSTALL OR RECONFIGURE MS-DOS 6.0 OPTIONAL PROGRAMS

  80.        |1. To install or reconfigure MS-DOS 6.0 optional programs Anti-  |
  81.        |   Virus, Backup, or Undelete, run SETUP /E from Setup Disk 1.   |
  82.        |2. Follow the instructions on your screen.                       |

  85.        ENABLE SWAPPING OF DRIVE C AND RESTART YOUR COMPUTER
  86.        
  87.         1. Insert Stacker Disk 1 into drive A or B.
  88.         2. Change to the floppy disk drive by typing A: (or B:) and
  89.             pressing <Enter>.
  90.         3. From the DOS prompt, type
  91.                 \TOOLS\STACINI C:
  92.         4. Change the swap parameter on the line C:\STACVOL.DSK back to
  93.            SW.
  94.        
  95.                     C:\STACVOL.DSK,SW
  96.        
  97.         5. Press Ctrl+Z to save the file.
  98.         6. Restart your computer.
  99.             
  100.        MODIFY SYSTEM.INI AND PROGMAN.INI
  101.        
  102.        MS-DOS 6.0 includes optional programs for Windows.  If you
  103.        installed or reconfigured these options running SETUP /E as
  104.        described in this document, then you must modify your SYSTEM.INI
  105.        and PROGMAN.INI files.
  106.        
  107.         1. Edit the file PROGMAN.INI in your Windows directory.  Find
  108.            the line:
  109.        
  110.                Group=drive:\DOS\WNTOOLS.GRP
  111.        
  112.            where drive is the letter of the uncompressed drive which is
  113.            exchanged with C.  Change drive to C:
  114.        
  115.                Group=C:\DOS\WNTOOLS.GRP
  116.        
  117.         2. Save the file.
  118.            
  119.            NOTE:  If you start Windows before making this modification,
  120.            you will get the error "Cannot open program group file
  121.            drive:\DOS\WNTOOLS.GRP'.  Load it in the future?"   Click
  122.            YES, then make the modification.  Program Manager will
  123.            correctly display the Microsoft Tools program group the next
  124.            time you start Windows.
  125.        
  126.         3. Edit the file SYSTEM.INI in your Windows directory.  Find
  127.            the VFINTD.386 line in the [386Enh] section:

  136.            where drive is the letter of the uncompressed drive which is
  137.            exchanged with C.  Change drive to C:
  138.

  141.         4. Save the file.
  142.            NOTE:  If you start Windows before making this modification,
  143.            you will get the error "Cannot find a device file that may
  144.            be needed to run Windows in 386 enhanced mode.  You need to
  145.            run the Setup program again.  drive:\DOS\VFINTD.386  Press a
  146.            key to continue."  Press any key, then change your SYSTEM.INI
  147.            file.
